The Grid Architects, known for their innovative and sustainable designs, have recently unveiled their latest project - Rope, a terrace cafe that combines modern aesthetics with a sustainable twist. Inspired by the traditional Indian charpoy, the designers have used jute rope to create space-modulating partitions and canopies that define individual seating islands.
Jute rope, the material that gives the cafe its name, is a sustainable and eco-friendly choice. It can take any form and transform a space, making it a versatile material for design. Additionally, jute rope has the advantage of not having thermal conductivity, helping to maintain a comfortable temperature in the cafe. The watered jute also keeps the surrounding area cool, creating a pleasant environment for visitors.
The design of Rope goes beyond just the use of jute rope. The south-west facade features corrugated sheets that protect the cafe from harsh sunlight, while rhythmically installed planks help channelize wind currents. The flooring is made from recycled babool wood, sourced from the forest department at a low cost. To ensure the longevity of the flooring and to protect the waterproofing layer for the offices below, the wood was not directly screwed onto the floors. Instead, flooring modules with aluminum frames were laid to allow water to flow easily below.
Upon entering the terrace, visitors are greeted by vibrant colors and the blueness of the sky. The entrance wall features a mural depicting the cafe's logo, which has become a popular selfie zone. The use of jute rope, recycled wooden table tops, and flooring not only adds to the ambiance but also helps with acoustics. An enclosed space with air conditioning provides a refuge from the city's harsh weather. The terrace also features a pink spiral staircase that leads to an upper terrace, serving as a smoking zone and a private area for special celebrations.
Throughout the design process, the Grid Architects prioritized earth-friendly materials and processes. They included local labor and craft, and the material palette consisted of recycled and locally available elements. The result is a cohesive identity for the space, where the use of indigenous materials and contemporary design techniques create an environment that is warm and inviting.
Rope, with its unique design and sustainable features, has garnered recognition in the design community. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2020, which recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Grid Architects' commitment to integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics has contributed to a better world.
